  • Form vs. Function: The Challenges of Operating a Recently Renovated Union

Mar 10, 2017, 16:48 PM by Elizabeth Beltramini
This time last year, Coastal Carolina University opened the new section of the Lib Jackson Student Union (formerly known as the Lib Jackson Student Center); the facility is comprised of Building A (new section) and Building B (old section). Debbie Conner, vice president of campus life and student engagement, said in her remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony that the new name of the facility—union—was used intentionally to indicate what occurs when something is formed by two or more things coming together. This space is a place for our students and our community to gather and learn from each other outside the classroom. However, in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the union, I’ve noticed some design and accessibility flaws that create barriers to fully achieving that vision.

Mar 7, 2017, 15:33 PM by Elizabeth Beltramini
Although student leaders likely want to host and attend safe events, they may not know exactly what types of risk could occur outside of standard alcohol- and travel-related risks. Therefore, it is helpful to understand the perceptions of risk that currently exist for student leaders, advisors, and university personnel. Feb 20, 2017, 18:10 PM by User Not Found
Many of us who work in student unions have some sort of advising component to our jobs. It could be supervision of student employees, advisement of a student organization, or less formal advising in our day-to-day interactions with students. Here are a few strategies I’ve found to be critical to my success (and sanity) as an advisor.

The need for developing a strategic plan is not a new concept for higher education or the student union field. Departmental strategic plans are valuable for many reasons that include setting the course of focus for an organization that connects to the mission, values, and organizational goals. Often, you may also see traditional strategic plans that branch off of a departmental plan into a more functional area strategic approach. Examples of these include a strategic marketing plan, communication plan or business plan, among others. However, a lesser known, but valuable tool, may be the facility management strategic plan.

  • Never Let a Good Crisis Go to Waste

Feb 20, 2017, 16:48 PM by User Not Found
After any significant event happens, it is important to allow a bit of breathing room from the incident itself to get through the immediate reactionary phase, and then begin processing what happened, why it happened, and what could be done to prevent it from happening in the future. In terms of the response to the incident, what went well, what could have gone better, and what should be done differently in the future. While all of us may have some sort of formal or informal crisis response plans, when an incident happens and you actually put the plan into effect, it gives you a chance to put theory into practice.

  • Modeling the Way in Work/Life Balance

Ever since I was fortunate enough to add a staff member to my office, I have modeled the way for them, and sharing this advice will help me do this. It’s not something that was done for me when I first started working in this field, so I wanted to be the example they looked to and followed, hoping that they will someday pay it forward when they supervise other staff members.
